Korean Baseball Game
A perk to this trip is I get to go on the University outings. Because of the monsoon, a lot of things have been moved around and rescheduled. Luckily for me I brought the heat, sun, and humidity with me so I have been able to do everything. After a day at the COEX we took the subway to meet the university at the baseball game. In the subway station just before exit they were selling these inflatable sticks with the team names on them. We were interested to see what exactly you did with these. I did not let the girls buy any until they had finished their work. We found a bench and had time to kill. Olympic Park was nearby. I plan to come back to walk around there.
I loved seeing the vendors selling food outside the stadium. The most common thing to buy was KFC fried chicken and then of course there was the squid and grubs.a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpBDJexPFDI-5KrR0oDNOSTcPZDpkiiARwG0F91qVEaVmOix9cRGU_1T8cf90eFRxTOB-76Wk7Qd46NWq0tWOsoq6Gnz5oX9C7oIoj2j4SI6-vDqHQt11rVfavf4dFz8AkvIGX/s1600/2011+Cristin+Korea+052.JPG">
After working and reading for 45 minutes I let the girls buy what turned out to be air bats. They bought a set for each team because we didn’t know who we were supposed to cheer for.
The game was the Bears vs. the Giants. It turned out that the Bears was one of Seoul’s team and the other Seoul team is the Twins. It was interesting how the team names were written in English. It turns out that baseball is popular here but they are not having a good year. Professional players only make $200-300,000 here so they hope to get on the Japanese league if they are good enough. The pitcher from the Bears was an American from the Arizona Diamondbacks. I guess he got demoted. I am not particularly a huge baseball fan but I did enjoy the game because of the cheering. There is one male cheerleader on top of the dugout leading the crowd in cheers and songs using the air bats. Then there are four female cheerleaders/dancers
that perform as well. It was definitely fun. It was much like a Carolina basketball game where you never sit down. As for food I ate the sub sandwich and Korean version of Sprite
provided by the university. Kay didn’t like the food and got KFC. Just like at our games people walk around the stadium selling snacks and drinks.
I got a Korean beer from a man wearing a keg backpack.
The game continued and we did a bottom of the fifth inning stretch where the players also went on the field and stretched. Then came a homerun to tie up the came right in the ninth inning. I was not too happy because it was late and I was tired. So the game continues but it can only go up to 12 innings. Luckily for me it only took another inning. The Giants ended up winning the game which was a loss to us since we were on the Bears side. Oh, well!On the bus ride back one of the professors showed us how to cheaply be a fan for the Giants. Each team has a sponsor. The Giants are sponsored by Lotte which is a grocery/department store. Apparently you can wear a bag on your head to show your support for free.
This lady is weird though because at the President's BBQ it looked like she was wearing pajamas so we weren't too sure if we could take her seriously.
