The Evening with the Kims

Since I had not yet been to a Korean apartment they decided to take me. It took almost an hour to get a bit outside of Seoul to their house. The apartment is pretty big with only two apartments per floor in their building. There were 4 bedrooms and 2 balconies. Their kitchen was very westernized and their table was from IKEA. The mom has a bad back so they don’t sit on the floor. We had an appetizer of honeydew and cherry tomatoes before going to a restaurant. Rory has two sisters who opted out of dinner. After much debate we ended up going to a Well Being restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Here we had an almost entirely vegetarian meal that was like eating meat. It was 13 courses! I knew because the menu listed it this way. We had salads, kimchi, and soup to start with. Then there were noodles and the only meat was duck wrapped in lettuce with a sauce. I was hesitant to try but ended up liking it. Next came all the meats that were really beans or tofu. We had “chicken nuggets” and “pork”. There were many vegetable sides. One of my favorites was the top of the Korean sweet potato. I also enjoyed the cucumber and grapes. I learned a lot about the health benefits as I ate. When dinner was over we drove back to Seoul where we had ice cream and walked the Cheonggyecheon stream. This stream was uncovered seven years ago when the mayor, now president, decided the city should be more “green”. They uncovered an original bridge. They have put in fountains and lights. It was a beautiful stroll. At Christmas time it is supposed to be gorgeous. I don’t know that I’ll ever be back in the winter so I’ll take their word for it. I learned so much from the Kims. It was wonderful to have built in tour guides and a translator.
