Boryeong Mud Festival

Saturday I attended Korea's 14th annual mud festival. Think of MTV spring break in Cancun but with lots of mud. Basically it is a drunken festival with tons of Americans covered in mud. It is 200 km north of Seoul on the Yellow Sea. It was a 2 1/2 hour train ride and then a 15 minute bus ride into town. The mud is considered rich in minerals and used to manufacture cosmetics. The mud is very good for your skin and health, so I was looking forward to being dirty. Once we got there the rain had stopped so we scoped out the place. We bought t-shirts and tickets to use the inflatables, then we found free lockers for foreigners or so it said. It turned out to cost money but not much however you needed exact change. Luckily we came up with it. Next up was lunch. The girls got chicken skewers. I was going to try a hotdog fried with potatoes on it which looked like a corn dog but opted for the chicken nugget cup. I thought the whole cup was filled with chicken but it was not. It was a trick there was coke on the bottom then another cup filled with chicken and a straw poking through. Pretty crafty! Another professor came with us and she had a classic lunch of bugels and beer.

After lunch it started to rain and at times pour which was sad because we wanted the mud to stick to our skin. So it was inflatables time. It was broken into 2 sections one for kids and one for adults. Diane, Eric, and I did the adult ones even though Kay could have as well. Our area was extremely crowded. I did four rides in an hour and a half. The first one was a race. Diane and I slid on our stomachs and then had to slide/run to the end. Then Diane and I went into Mud Jail
where buckets of mud are poured in. Next stop was a mud pit.
Since it was full of drunk Americans it was a bit rough. The funny part was waiting in line. You have to take your shoes off so it makes more sense to put them at the exit. So I did that. Diane thought she was being smooth and flung her flipflops off. Well it turns out one ended up in the mud pit. Oops! After shouting a few times someone threw it out to us. The last ride was the giant inflatable slide.
You slide down and then mud gets dumped on you. We met back up with the other girls and painted ourselves with mud. We let it dry on our skin so we'd have soft skin. To wash it off we went to the way crowded beach and swam in the Yellow Sea. We were having a grand time until Diane suddenly disappeared. After a good scary 15 minutes of patrolling the beach up and down she casually walked down the beach covered in mud. She went back to the painting station for more mud. She did tell Kay but that information was not given to us. So after a bit of a lecture we moved on. There were lots of booths with things to buy and do so we looked around. The girls made soap and candles.

I wanted to get painted with colored mud but I was already clean so I decided not to. I looked around for strange foods but only saw grubs as the strange delicacy. Too many Americans! Really I mean it was 90% American with the F bomb being the word of the day. Just as we were about to leave a parade started. It was a typical parade with bands and floats and balloons. I liked the Michael Jackson, Superman, Elvis trio best.
We taxied back to the train station and mostly rested on the long train ride home. Dinner was snacks from the train station and then a noodle bowl when we got home. Showering was mandatory but we still continue to find traces of mud 2 days later. Mud Fest was a blast! Here are few favorite pictures. I also love the way we find misspellings of English all over!
