On Wednesday, November 19th my third graders were going to dissect chicken wings. This was the culminating activity for our study of Bones and Muscles. A parent had volunteered to boil and send in 24 chicken wings. Great! No extra boiling for me this year.
So that morning the chicken wings don't arrive. No biggie! I could swap my lessons if needed. So I have the child call her folks and moments later the chicken wings arrive. Excellent! We are good to go. My student teacher puts them in my shared office.
Lunch time arrives which is my science prep time. I go in the office to get ready for set up and to my surprise the wings are M.I.A! Knowing my co-worker , EOrr my office mate) was having her Thanksgiving lunch I pranced right into her room to investigate. No wings to be found! I casually asked Lewis, the assistant and he busts out laughing. He tells me he thought they were for their lunch and noticed they were not cooked. (They were cooked but not the way most chicken would be served.) So he took them to the cafeteria, got them seasoned, and baked. I was not happy!
Regardless of the fiasco he went and retrieved them for me and our dissection was just a bit greasier than usual. And I let the kids eat as they dissected. I was surprised so many continued to eat as we discovered it was the muscle we were eating. The dissection went well and learning still went on! If only I were an expert on chickens. I get some crazy questions.
